Searchbox ad's

From Iain Tait's blog
I was watching TV last night and an ad came on for continuing education. It’s one with fingers walking around the place. The ad was OK. I didn’t really pay much attention. But at the end of the ad the call to action was - “search for EMA online”. Not visit direct.gov.uk/ema or what you’d normally get, but just search for EMA online.

This quote from Nick Burcher's is particularly interesting and has relevance for any graphic designers.
Search boxes, QR codes and other developments like this seem to have the potential to fundamentally alter the way that consumers respond to ads and it will be interesting to see where this goes!

I saw examples of these Japanese search box ads in a presentation that Nikkei BP gave on the Japanese market at the end of last year.

In Japan the Search box with recommended search terms is also used on TV ads and intriguingly press ads in newspapers / magazines carry these Search boxes too (even though it is much easier to just print the web address rather than print a search term and then optimise Search engine results accordingly!)

Another form of quick link, the QR code, is also prominent in Japan - often running alongside the Search box on outdoor or in print. Ads feature a bespoke (QR) barcode and scanning / photographing this with a mobile phone results in your mobile browser going straight to the desired website. Few UK phones can deal with this yet but many new handsets have this inbuilt (eg the Nokia N95.) The beauty of this is not just that it makes it easy for consumers to reach your site from their mobile, but it also introduces a whole new level of interactivity for static ads on outdoor / in print (its easy to track respondents too). The Sun newspaper are experimenting with this technology and in December 07 ran a 4 page feature on QR codes - I don’t think it will be long before these start appearing regularly on UK ads / in UK editorial.

Drag and drop experiment with Flex

Drag and drop test
Dead simple feed of tagged Flickr images with a drag and drop effect to allow you to rearrange them. Next step to add an extra canvas to drop selected images into.

Intial work with Flex

So after a couple of weeks off I'm back and developing ideas for this digital/online/virtual MA space. Keen to avoid issues I've had before about trying to make things harder than they need to be or getting fixed on an outcome I've decided to break the project down it small chunks and see what work evolves.

My aim over the next week is to have a page of random images that can be moved around the screen. Eventually these will be dragged and dropped into a bin or lightbox.

For this I'm using Flex, whats most useful about this is there are pretty straight forward options to pull in random images from Flickr
see here for a basic test
This gives me a base of images to work with and allows me to work on more of the design and layout of this space(I'm calling it a space from now on)

Starting points.........

Cedric Price I've been looking at a lot of his books and work recenltly as a way of presenting ideas and proposals for work.

New work

I need to get some work together for the MA. The NOISE project took a lot out of me but I need to get working on something else. I have a lot to write up abut NOISE, design ideas, online promotion ideas that may or may not be used for NOISE. I still need to write up the Portrait of a Nation project and what my role was in that.
That site is now officially out there and being used
www.portraitofanation.net

So I'm starting to think of where to go next. I want to get some small coded pieces of work done, either in Flex or Processing. Mainly because my coding is none existent at the moment. I'd love to be able to work as an artist with these programs and just create but I can't work that way. I need a brief or a problem to get me started. Mark mentioned this on Wed's. Would you rather be a musician or a designer? Well you could always do music as a hobby, you'd never choose to do design as a hobby. You need problems to solve.

I've decided to return to the original brief of an online MA space, using the site Graham has built as a starting point. The original idea was to create an online version of a studio space, where work can be tested and viewed by others. This is different to an online portfolio or gallery. I'm returning to the idea of the site as an interior space that people interact with and designing the site(space?) along those lines. I want this to be more abstract though, not aiming for a finished space. Rather trying to recreate the elements of a space. A simple starting point is being able to upload work to the main site and feed to a page where the images can be rearranged.

What I am aware of is, and something that has happened a lot over the course of the MA is getting stuck with coding. I need to avoid this. Working on the NOISE and PoN sites have shown me that it is possible to work with a bit of code, mock ups and text. That is what I need for this project sketches, layouts, mock-ups, text and test pieces of code. Archtecture and interior design again comes into play again. Plannning and designing for spaces that may never be built or have to be built by a team of people at a later stage.

NOISE Festival Launch

So the new site is up and running. We launched it a 11 Downing Street on the 26th of February. I'm sure at some point in the next few weeks I'll look back and say fucking hell a site I designed and help build was launched at Number 11 but at the moment I still feel exhausted after what was the most stressful few days I have ever had.
Quite simply I need my holiday which is only 10 days away.
I also need to do some smaller scale MA pieces. The NOISE stuff, I need a break from.
